Chapter 13-15

 Chapter 13

My film will have a first-person point of view and narration.  While there are speaking parts scattered throughout the film, some scenes will have some text over them such as names of cities.  A title card will help bridge sequences.  "Sometimes you need narration to set the stage for a scene that can play out on camera without interruption, or to make a transition from one sequence to the next" (Bernard 214).  The introduction narrative and early shots will provide the tone for the rest of the film.  "In the film's opening minutes, you want to set up the questions that will drive your story forward.  You then want to anticipate the audience's needs and almost intuitively seed information in..." (Bernard 220).

Chapter 14

Since my film is about a visit to Japan, it is providing a new perspective on the country.  The audience may pick up on new things or places they've yet to see.  If the material was only about the history of Japan, the audience could be less compelled to finish the film.  The audience should feel connected and hope to visit the country for themselves.

Chapter 15

Filmmaker Alex Gibney discusses how good storytelling goes hand in hand with an effective narrative.  In order to draw the audience in my own film, the imagery must make sense with the narrative.  There should be a purpose or reason why the filmmaker includes images or video in relation to the story.  It's important a film does not drag on too long and comes to a fitting conclusion.

  1. Chapter 13 - you discuss title cards to bridge the sequences, what about graphical treatment and the use of music in bridging that gap? Thoughts? What about perhaps some on camera work to bridge the gaps?

Chapter 14 - OK, but remember you are expressing your POV, what elements do you need to convet to have them enthused and motivated to visit - from your POV?

Chapter 15 - good comment couldn't agree more!

    1. Ch. 13 - On camera work will help bridge the gap. Transition effects followed by narration will help guide the audience to the next set of slides/clips.

Ch. 14 - I can mention some of the customs and common etiquettes of the country. The country is very clean and people are polite. Streets barely have any litter and mostly everything is neat.
